What is fabric softener?
Fabric softener is added to the machine wash together with the normal detergent and ensures that the textile fibres do not harden during drying. How does it work? Due to friction during the main wash cycle, the clothes become electrostatically charged and the surface of the clothes is negatively charged as a result. Fabric softeners contain a special type of substance called cationic surfactants. These surfactants are positively charged on one side and can therefore attach themselves to negatively charged laundry fibres. This makes the textiles smooth and snug. This effect has several other advantages. For example, the laundry dries faster, the textiles are easier to iron, the fibres become more water-repellent, less lint is formed, the colours shine longer, signs of wear such as fading and wearing out are reduced and synthetic fibres become less electrostatically charged. And last but not least, the fragrance of the fabric softener provides a pleasant freshness.
How to use a fabric softener?
The fabric softener is poured into the compartment provided before starting the detergent. This is usually the compartment to the right of the detergent compartment and is usually marked with a flower. Since detergent and fabric softener must not mix, there are two separate compartments for this purpose. The fabric softener is then added during the last rinse cycle, after the detergent has already been able to unfold its cleaning effect. The dosage of fabric softener varies and can be taken directly from the dosage instructions on the product packaging.
Which textiles should not be washed with fabric softener?
Some textiles, however, should not be washed with fabric softener because the fabric softener covers the fibres like a protective film during washing and thus negatively affects the specific properties of some types of fabric. Fabrics that cannot be washed with fabric softener include terry, stretch, wool, fleece, microfibre, silk, functional clothing and down. All other materials can be washed with a fabric softener without any problems.
Unsuitable for fabric softener are:
- Terrycloth: Many hand and bath towels, flannels and bathrobes are made of terrycloth. Fabric softener would impair their absorbency.
- Stretch: This can damage the elastic fibres in the fabric and cause it to stretch out.
- Wool, fleece & microfibre: The fluffiness of these fabrics is lost due to the smoothing effect of fabric softener.
- Silk: The shimmering fabric can lose its shine.
- Sports & functional clothing: Due to the water-repellent effect, the pores of the fabric close. This is therefore counterproductive for garments that are supposed to wick sweat away to the outside.
- Down: The natural fillings of pillows, duvets and jackets are sensitive and also do not tolerate fabric softeners.
What should be taken into account when using fabric softener?
Economical is advisable here! Fabric softener should be used sparingly, as this is good for the environment, the washing machine and ultimately your wallet. If you overdo it, this can cause damage to the washing machine in the worst case, as deposits can form in the hoses or a film in the drum. Therefore, you should check the compartment for fabric softener from time to time for residues and remove them regularly. Too much fabric softener can also gum up the fibres of the clothes and thus damage them in the long run. It is therefore advisable not to use the fabric softener with every wash cycle so that the accumulated excess can wash out.
